Abstract
Reliance on single-sample designs without control groups has hampered the effectiveness of research on residential treatment for children and adolescents, although it has yielded useful information for conceptualization and postdischarge planning. More powerful comparative research designs between, within, and across programs are examined, and recommendations are made for their use in future outcome studies in this area. Keywords
