Abstract
Much has been written on the use of color as a functional facilitator in the environment of the elderly, but little information is available on how to implement it. This paper a) restates the main age-acquired visual defects, b) critically examines the literature on the use of environmental color, and then c) proposes a model which incorporates the factors that enhance visual clarity and Johannes Itten’s rules of color contrast. Implicit in the application of color to enhance vision is a clear understanding of the main functional purpose of the area to be heightened. Keywords
