Self-focusing receiving array

Abstract
The paper describes a self-focusing array which may be used for receiving signals over a wide range of incident angles and with a high aerial gain. The received signals are accompanied by a fixed-frequency pilot carrier, which is used to phase the array to receive the incoming signals. It is shown that such arrays suffer a bandwidth limitation, which takes the form of phase distortion of the signal band. Results are described for an 8-element experimental array working at 460.5 Mc/s, which will focus onto received signals over a ±60° range of angles and also focus onto transmitters placed in its own Fresnel region.
