Abstract
The purpose of analyzing a series of cases of sciatica and presenting it before this section is to discuss whether there is such a condition or clinical entity that is called essential or idiopathic sciatica. Also I wish to discuss in relation to teaching, what should be taught, and in what department of the medical school should it be made the subject of teaching. There is no question but that it is firmly fixed in the layman's mind that sciatica is a disease in itself, a distinct entity, and I am sure that the profession at large also is satisfied that it is an entity, although realizing that at times it may be a symptom of a lesion elsewhere. If we appreciate that there is a definite cause in every case and that cause can be demonstrated as a physical fact, then much of the uncertainty will be changed and
