Abstract
The 2 phantom midges C. flavicans and C. obscuripes show differences in morphology, diel migration pattern and life history tactics, and have probably evolved in different types of lakes. Several selective factors differ between these 2 types of lakes: predation by visually searching fish, predation by larger benthic invertebrates, and food (particle) size and temporal availability. Experiments and field studies indicate that these selective factors are responsible for the observed differences between the species.
