Abstract
14C labeled fatty acids and sodium acetate were added to mushroom compost at the time of casing in a crop grown under commercial conditions. Sporophore tissue, casing material and compost were analyzed for incorporation of 14C into water soluble compounds and lipids. Incorporation of labeled material in sporophore lipid extracts was directed toward sterols and phospholipid from both acetate and fatty acid precursors. Incorporation of labelled material in mannitol from both acetate and fatty acid precursors indicated an active gluconeogenic pathway. It is suggested that acetate or a low molecular weight intermediate may be transported through the mycelial network by diffusion to the sites of synthesis of sporophore structural components. This publication has 3 references indexed in Scilit:
