Application of Factor Analysis to Gas–Liquid Chromatography

Abstract
The mathematical method of factor analysis is applied to a data matrix of retention indices for 30 solutes on 23 stationary liquid phases. Eight abstract eigenvectors are required to reproduce the data within experimental error. A gas phase imperfection term based on the van der Waals equation of state tests successfully as a fundamental factor of the space. A test vector termed the uniqueness test is used to determine the extent to which molecules possess a particular property. The uniqueness test is applied to rank solutes in terms of (1) alcohol-like character and (2) electron-donor ability.
