Abstract
Peripheral blood ammonia concentrations in a group of patients undergoing electroschock therapy with active convulsions was elevated, as compared to a group where premedication prevented muscular contractions and no appreciable change in blood ammonia levels resulted. Elevations in ammonia levels were also recorded in convulsions in dogs given intravenous pentetrazole and in active voluntary muscular exercise in human subjects. The possibility that increase in circulating blood ammonia may be a factor in the hyperpnea of muscular exercise is discussed. Keywords
