Abstract
The differential reaction time of the voluntary and reflex eyelid responses as dependent upon the interval between the various stimuli, was investigated. The 4 intervals used were 1/2, 1, 2, and 4 sec. The reflex responses were obtained by electrical and also by mechanical stimulation. A comparison was made of the latency of the eyelid reflex obtained by the 2 methods of stimulation and also a comparison was made between each of these and the voluntary eyelid responses at the various intervals between stimuli. The 2-sec. interval was found to be the most favorable to quickness of response in the case of voluntary eyelid responses for the group (N = 10) with considerable individual variation. There was little evidence, however, that the length of the interval between stimuli (within the range investigated) had any appreciable influence upon the speed of the reflex eyelid reaction. A rather marked difference between the latency of the electrically and the mechanically stimulated eyelid reflex was found.
