Abstract
An experimental framework for the construction of blackboard systems, called Ariadne-1, is described. Ariadne-1 differs from many other blackboard shells in its explicit provision of meta-level facilities and its encouragement of the user to represent control information directly. Although one or two other systems and shells offer similar facilities, Ariadne-1 also makes the functions used to build the system available for incorporation into specific applications. This last measure is intended to form a basis for future work into extensions of the blackboard architecture for complex problem-solving activities.
