CD‐ROM for Public Access Catalogs

Abstract
Since its introduction into the library automation field in 1984, the CD‐ROM has been widely considered to be one of the most promising technological advancements of this decade. Because of its ability to store and retrieve large amounts of information inexpensively, the CD‐ROM seems to be well suited to applications involving bibliographic information, such as the public access catalog. In July 1985, Brodart introduced the first CD‐ROM‐based public access catalog, which was designed to compete with both COM and online catalogs.
