Psychiatric and Pharmacologic Aspects of some Peculiarities of Effects of Antidepressants in the Aged

Abstract
In the early and late stages of ontogenesis there is an increased sensitivity to Imipramin in animals and man. On the basis of experimental and clinical findings it may be assumed that tricyclic antidepressants are suitable for the treatment of parkinsonism. Antidepressants with a sedative effect (amitriptylin and similar drugs) are indicated for elderly patients presenting with increased anxiety and fear as is quite often the case. However, use of these drugs in geriatric practice requires a good deal of caution. Greater consideration should be given to tryptophan metabolism, in which the antidepressants intervene, in elderly, psychically disturbed patients. Gegenüber Imipramin besteht in den frühen und späten Stadien der Ontogenese bei Tier und Mensch eine hohe Empfindlichkeit. Auf Grund experimenteller und klinischer Befunde ist anzunehmen, daß tricyclische Antidepressiva zur Behandlung von Parkinsonismus geeignet sind. Gegen die häufig vorhandene Unruhe und Angst bei depressiven Patienten im hohen Alter sind Antidepressiva mit sedativem Effekt (Amitriptylin etc.) indiziert. Doch ist bei Verwendung dieser Substanzen in der geriatrischen Praxis besondere Vorsicht geboten. Bei alten, psychisch gestörten Patienten sollte der Tryptophanstoffwechsel, in den die Antidepressiva eingreifen, stärker berücksichtigt werden.
