The Water Content of Bacterial Spores

Abstract
The water content of the spores and vegetative cells of Bacillus subtilis, Bac. megatherium and Bac. mycoides was detd. Using air dried cells as a basis the moisture contents of the 2 types of cells were almost identical. Moist weight is considered unsatisfactory as a basis for comparisons of the 2 types. Differences in water content in the 2 types of cells is evidently not the true explanation of the differences in heat resistance of the 2 forms. The possibility of a difference in the the ratio of free and bound water in the 2 cell types is suggested.
