Measurements of the gas contents of clusters of galaxies by observations of the background radiation at 10.6 GHz - II

Abstract
The final results of a 4500-hr search for anisotropics in the microwave background radiation towards 15 clusters of galaxies are presented. Significant depressions in the temperature of this radiation at 10.6 GHz were found in the directions of Abell 576 and 2218; the mean gas density and temperature at the cluster centres inferred from the data on a subset of our cluster sample are about 3 × 10−24 kg m−3 and 3 × 108 K. Scans across A 576 and A 2218 provide measures of the distribution of the decrement, and a map of a reference patch of blank sky yields an estimate of the confusion level for these observations and a limit to the systematic error. A technique suitable for the analysis of data for very small flux-densities is described, and the prospects for future observations of this type are discussed.
