Abstract
The purpose of this article is to outline a model for leisure counseling. First, recent psychological and sociological developments are interpreted in the context of Maslow's theory of motivation to document the need for leisure counseling. Next, a paradigm for leisure counseling is suggested which, 1) argues for a holistic conceptualization of leisure; 2) outlines the leisure counseling process; 3) identifies the immediate and ultimate goals of leisure counseling and discusses intervention strategies for achieving these goals; and 4) describes the attitudes, knowledge and skills of the effective leisure counselor. Keywords
