Abstract
The time is right, argues Wise, for the professionalization of teaching. For pro fessional status to become reality, teachers must take control of the certifi cation process just as professionals in other fields have done. If decision proc esses are left as they are, lying some where between state departments of education and colleges of education, we will assure, asserts the author, that stan dards are relaxed to whatever level is necessary to provide classrooms with teachers. Wise also advocates graduate educa tion as a necessary next step in the process of professionalizing teaching. The Master's degree approach, he ob serves, can provide an impetus for re conceptualizing teacher education that, when coupled with teacher control of certification, can well result in prepared teachers in whom the public can have confidence.
