Abstract
In the man, rat and mouse the pancreatic islet tissue was found to be dispersed into bodies of different sizes according to a simple mathematical relationship. This regular arrangement makes it possible to introduce rapid methods for estimation of the total islet volume. Instead of a large series of careful islet area measure-ments it is only necessary to count the larger islet section surfaces in pancreatic sections taken at regular intervals. There is also a linear relationship between the total islet volume and the number of longer islet intercepts, obtained by the automatic scanning of sections with parallel lines. Keywords
