New Methods for Determination of the Pancreatic Islet Volume

Abstract
In the man, rat and mouse the pancreatic islet tissue was found to be dispersed into bodies of different sizes according to a simple mathematical relationship. This regular arrangement makes it possible to introduce rapid methods for estimation of the total islet volume. Instead of a large series of careful islet area measure-ments it is only necessary to count the larger islet section surfaces in pancreatic sections taken at regular intervals. There is also a linear relationship between the total islet volume and the number of longer islet intercepts, obtained by the automatic scanning of sections with parallel lines.
