Abstract
The author presents several equations which make possible the estimation of the fat content (fat % lean dry weight) and the flight range (miles) of 12 species of shorebirds (Charadriidae and Scolopacidae), from the fresh weight of the bird and a visual classification of its subcutaneous fat deposits. Such equations allow the bird-banders and the experimental ornithologists to gather a large amount of data concerning the physiological pre- and post-migratory state of these birds and their migration routes.
