Abstract
At the Hospitals for Sick Children, the glass/mercury thermometer Ls used to record the axillary temperature for all children and babies. The oral site is sometimes used for older children at the discretion of the nurse, but is not advocated. The discontinuation of the routine use of the rectal site in babies under one year of age was in response to many studies suggesting that it is unsafe and unnecessary, and that the axillary site was an accurate alternative (1.2).
