Abstract
The recording of protocols of student problem solving is briefly described and some of the problems arising in this approach, and the difficulties faced by the researcher, are discussed. A number of detailed improvements are suggested which can greatly increase the powerfulness of the feedback obtained from the making of recorded protocols, in return for a modest additional involvement from the researcher. Keywords
