Abstract
The ground state of an electron gas is studied by means of the method of correlated basis functions developed by Wu and Feenberg. The optimum form of the Bijl-Dingle-Jastrow-type wave function of a charged-boson gas obtained with the application of the paired-phonon analysis is used as the correlation factor in a trial wave function describing the electron gas. Numerical results are given for the correlation energy per particle and the radial distribution function at metallic densities. The high-density limit of the system is briefly discussed. Keywords
