PROGNOSIS IN SUBARACHNOID HEMORRHAGE

Abstract
One hundred and thirty-four patients with spontaneous subarachnoid hemorrhage admitted to the Charity Hospital from 1950 through 1956 were studied. Fifty-seven patients died, an overall mortality of 43%. Thirty-eight patients died within the first week of hospitaliza- tion and 20 of these within the first 24 hours. Sixty-two patients had angiographic studies. Aneurysms of the Circle of Willis were demonstrated in 33 patients. Cerebral angiography is definitely indicated for patients who have subarachnoid hemorrhage, and the optimal time for its performance seems to be 1-2 weeks after bleeding.
