Abstract
Various forms of brake-fade test are used in the motor industry, and it is suggested that a standardized test schedule is required, the latter being based on contemporary operating conditions. A study of brake usage of a number of passenger cars with different drivers operating over four selected routes had been carried out previously, and the results of this investigation are used to formulate two tests which it is proposed should replace the existing fade test. The proposed tests simulate as closely as possible maximum braking conditions recorded on the four routes, and the test specification for any particular car may be arrived at by substituting known car characteristics into formulae. A test schedule is derived for a typical modern car, and the results obtained from the tests on this car are presented and interpreted. Keywords
