Abstract
Further cation self-diffusion measurements have been made in MgO single crystals using the radio-active tracer Mg28 and a serial sectioning method over the temperature range 1265°c to 2350°c. Results indicate that previous data (Harding, Price and Mortlock 1971) were influenced by the presence of impurities in the tracer solution. The results published by Lindner and Parfitt (1957) probably relate to an impurity precipitation influenced region and are in good agreement with the new data at temperatures below 1540°c. There is, in addition, a suggestion of diffusion enhancement by a short-circuit mechanism at the lowest temperatures. The enthalpy of motion of a cation vacancy in MgO is found to be 1·56 eV and the enthalpy of formation of a Schottky defect pair is 3·8 ev.Keywords
