Abstract
Previous findings that have led to the `sliding-filament' model for striated muscle are reviewed, together with some recent observations on isolated filaments produced by a new procedure. The basic structure of the contractile apparatus in skeletal and in cardiac muscle appears to be identical. The relation between certain special features of cardiac muscle and its structure is discussed. Keywords
