URINARY EXCRETION OF OESTRONE AND OESTRADIOL-17α IN COWS WITH CYSTIC OVARIES

Abstract
Using a method comprising fluorimetry the urinary excretion of oestrogens was determined daily for an extended period of time in two cows with ovarian cysts. The excretion patterns were characterized by wide peaks separated by relatively narrow minima spaced over 2–4 weeks. During the repetitive periods of high excretion rates the urinary contents of oestrone as well as of oestradiol-17α were considerably larger than those associated with an ovulatory follicular phase in normal cows. The oestrogen excretion in the abnormal animals decreased to low levels after ovariectomy which was performed after an observation period of about 10 weeks.
