The magnetic energy of grain boundaries

Abstract
As a result of the magnetic energy associated with the grain boundaries in a polycrystalline material, the domain spacing differs considerably from that in a similar single crystal. The energy arises from easy direction variations across the boundaries and the finite boundary thickness. Simple models are used to calculate the dependence of the mean domain spacing on each of these effects for grain-oriented barium ferrite.
