The Effect of 2-Mev Whole-Body X-Irradiation on Primates

Abstract
One hundred-four primates (Macaca mulatto) were irradiated with graded single exposures of 2 Mev X-rays; and LD50/30 of 670 [plus or minus] 20 (S.E.) rads was estimated. Hematological studied performed over a 90-day postirradiation period revealed no essential difference from previously described results. Serum lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) levels were significantly increased during the first 4 postirradiation days, but they subsequently returned to normal ranges by the 7th day. Alkaline phosphatase and leucine aminopeptidase levels were unchanged over the 90-day observation period. Clinical changes occurring during the postirradiation period were characteristic of the "hematological" type of death, with the exception of a single animal which died a typical "gastrointestinal** death. Examination of tissues obtained at post mortem strongly suggests that sepsis was the immediate cause of death.
