ENZYMATIC ACTIVITY OF NITROSOMONAS EXTRACTS

Abstract
Studies of the enzymatic activity of cell extracts of Nitrosomonas europaea have shown the presence of a heat-labile, cyanide-sensitive catalyst bringing about the disappearance of hydroxylamine. Nitrite was not detected as a product of the reaction. The responsible enzyme is associated with the particle-free supernatant obtained by centrifugation at 144,000 x G. The possible role of this reaction in nitrification is discussed.
