The Histopathology of Masseteric Hypertrophy

Abstract
"True hypertrophy" is duly listed among the diseases of muscle by Adams, Denny-Brown, and Pearson1 in their excellent monograph. That so-called benign, idiopathic masseteric hypertrophy belongs to this category is by no means generally accepted. Gurney2 was the first to suggest that the condition was a work-hypertrophy, and Kern3 agreed with him, but Maxwell and Waggoner4 did not. Several avenues of research are required in order to settle this and other important questions. Such a comprehensive study of the subject has been carried out by the authors and their associates.* The subject may seem to some readers scarcely worth such efforts. From a strictly surgical, or even diagnostic viewpoint, the authors would agree. It happens, however, that extraordinarily interesting psychiatric ramifications are involved, and our investigations, while doing (we hope) some justice to the somatic aspects of the condition, are primarily in the fields of psychiatry
