Abstract
In this paper tests on small steel frames subjected to impulsive loadings are described, in which it was observed that the frames deformed plastically in a variety of modes during the motion. These modes had either one or two degrees of freedom, in contrast to the behaviour in tests published previously, where the frames deformed without mode changes. Records of the transient force pulse and deflection of the frames are given and these are compared with theoretical values, taking into account strain-hardening and strain-rate-sensitivity of the steel.
