Abstract
By use of methods of paper chromatography and spectroscopy wherein 0.2ug. may be detected, no cytosine, 5-methylcytosine or uracil could be found in 4 detns. of the extract of the bacteriophage T2 grown on Escherichia coli strain B. Since the host cell has high cytosine content, the phage T2 must depend on nuclear pentose nucleic acid for its synthesis. In the complete absorption curves taken, adenine and thymine showed standard curves but guanine deviated in the region between 270-290 m/z. Absence of cytosine shows evidence of another form of desoxypentose nucleic acid (DNA) and the dependence of Tu synthesis on some more general property of DNA than on its internal structural arrangement. Keywords
