In Vivo (Dairy Calves) and in Vitro Studies with Surface-Active Agents

Abstract
The feeding of surface-active agents (Aerosol C-61 at 1 g. and 2 g. daily/calf, or Aerosol SE, Aerosol AN, TEF-16, and Tide at 1 lb./1000 lb. concentrate feed mixture) had no significant influence on the growth rates of dairy calves (40 calves, 2 trials). Moreover, the detergents had no effect on hay and concentrate consumption, incidence of diarrhea, fecal pH, blood plasma fat levels, or hemoglobin, erythrocyte, leucocyte, and differential leucocyte values of the blood. Addition of surface-active agents and of penicillin to distilled water and to rumen fluid caused relatively large reductions in surface tension, whereas Aureomycin and Terramycin had no appreciable influence on the surface tension of these liquids.
