Cefotaxime in bronchopulmonary infections--a clinical and pharmacological study

Abstract
In a comparative study, the serum and sputum concentrations were determined in 12 patients with chronic mucopurulent bronchitis after 1.0 g and 2.0 g cefotaxime (CTAX) i.v. and 1.0 g cefazolin (CAZO) i.v. CAZO produced high-serum concentrations with relatively prolonged levels. CTAX showed a relatively rapid fall in serum levels with concentrations of 0.28 ± 0.16 mg/l (8 h/1.0 g) and 0.73 ± 0.22 mg/l (8 h/2.0 g). In six patients with exudative pleurisy, serum and pleural concentrations were determined after 1.0 g CTAX i.v. The maximal pleural concentrations were 7.1 ± 3.5 mg/l (3 h). Fourteen of 19 patients with bronchopulmonary infections were treated successfully with 3 × 1–2 g CTAX i.v. per day.
