Abstract
Tests in vitro demonstrated that contrary to the literature, Poria weirii Murr. produces relatively fine, much-branched mycelium within wood structure of different western Canadian woods. The occurrence of relatively coarse, unbranched hyphae which tend to advance through tracheids perpendicularly to the walls and to appear to constrict in penetrating intertracheal walls of Thuja plicat Donn was associated with Fungi Imperfecti spp. Certain other characteristics of hyphae appeared to be of limited value in identification, but the occurrence of double clamp connections on hyphae within wood was apparently specific for Stereum sanguinolentum.
