SEVERE HYPOTENSIVE REACTIONS FOLLOWING MEPROBAMATE OVERDOSAGE

Abstract
In one case, ingestion of under 12 g of meprobamate resulted in coma and shock which were only temporarily reversed by phenylephrine HC1 and levarterenol. Excessive fluid administration associated with efforts to maintain blood pressure contributed to death in 34 hours after ingestion of the drug. In another case, shock after taking 6 g of meprobamate could not be reversed by epinephrine but was reversed by intravenous saline with complete recovery. Review of these cases and the literature suggests that the hypotension following meprobamate overdosage is related to direct action on the blood vessels and is not readily reversible with the pressor amines.
