Abstract
LEUKOCYTE alkaline phosphatase scores are often lower than control values in patients with sickle-cell anemia.1 , 2 This difference is especially marked in such patients with leukocytosis, in whom we have observed that leukocyte alkaline phosphatase scores increase during bacterial infections, in contrast to painful, febrile crises.Materials and MethodsForty-one patients with electrophoretically proved sickle-cell anemia were studied during the steady state. Leukocyte alkaline phosphatase scores were again obtained in 25 of these cases during a vaso-occlusive crisis without evidence of infection. All patients with crisis had some degree of fever. Sixteen were restudied during bacterial infections with or without a . . .Keywords
