The Occurrence and Relative Importance of Nanno-Chlorophyta in Freshwater Algal Communities

Abstract
A quantitative study of nanno-Chlorophyta was carried out over a period of 2 yr in 2 pools of contrasting trophic status in Somerset [England]. Investigations have included studies of these algae in phytoplankton, epipelon and in association with Elodea and Sphagnum. The importance of these small algae has been assessed in comparison with standing crop data for the larger phytoplanktonic and epipelic algae. Nanno-Chlorophyta were very significant in the plankton of both water types and in the epipelon of the oligotrophic pool. The evidence shows that nanno-Chlorophyta are of widespread occurrence, that standing crops and periodicity vary in different algal communities and that these algae may be more numerous than previously thought.
