Abstract
Direct and indirect evidence is presented to support the claim that absorption of water occurs in regions where CO2 accumulates (venous blood) and secretion occurs in regions supplied by arterial blood (low in CO2 content). Data are presented concerning the hydrophilic capacity of frog muscle without and with the presence of CO?. The results include the amt. of hydration occurring in distilled water, various concs. of HC1, NaOH, urea. The author concludes that the accumulation of CO2 in tissues produces an increased acidity which leads to the addition of base and the resulting combination becomes more hydrated. The direction in which the base and water moves depends upon the degree of acid in the tissue cells, and the degree of alkali reserve of the blood in contact with such cells.
