INVITRO AND INVIVO ACTIVITY OF STREPTOMYCIN AND ISONIAZID SINGLY AND IN COMBINATION

Abstract
Streptomycin exerts greater tuberculocidal effect than isoniazid: There was also a slower emergence of resistance to combinations of streptomycin and isoniazid than to either compound alone. Neither compound prevents the ultimate emergence of resistance to the other. Cross-resistance occurs under certain conditions although isoniazid is effective against streptomycin-resistant organisms not previously exposed to isoniazid, and streptomycin is effective against isoniazid-resistant organisms not previously in contact with streptomycin. Under ideal conditions, streptomycin and isoniazid may act synergistically.
