EXPRESSION OF RL 4137 TYPE OF DORMANCY IN F1 SEEDS OF RECIPROCAL CROSSES IN COMMON WHEAT

Abstract
Germination of F1 seeds of reciprical crosses between dormant RL 4137 and four less-dormant cultivars of Triticum aestivum L. was compared. Significant reciprocal differences were obtained in all four crosses. The F1 seeds having RL 4137 as the maternal parent were more dormant than the reciprocals, indicating that the seed coat and/or endosperm have a significant influence on seed dormancy. The embryo component of seed dormancy was partially dominant since the F1 seeds with RL 4137 as pollen parent were more dormant than seeds of the less-dormant parents. The degree of dominance in the F1 seeds varied among the crosses. A selection procedure for the development of a sprouting resistant cultivar through backcrossing is discussed.
