Abstract
As special educators address the needs of adjudicated handicapped youth, training programs that adequately prepare prospective teachers need to be developed. This paper examines teacher training from several perspectives. A summary of a national survey of administrators in correctional and special education is discussed. Inservice and pre service training programs in corrections and special education at the University of Maryland are reviewed. Finally, specific recommendations for developing training programs are made. Graduates of well-designed training programs are streetwise and politically savvy as well as professionally competent. Keywords
