Abstract
Metamict damage cross-sections for pollucite, CaAl12O19 and spinel, irradiated with 3 MeV Ar+ ions, are found to be 0.8±0.4, ∼ 10−2 and ∼ 5 × 10−4 nm2 respectively. The results for CaAl12O19 are discussed and compared to neutron-irradiated BeO. Crystal structures with close packing of oxygen ions (CaAl12O19, spinel) have very small damage cross-sections.Keywords
