Abstract
THE ROLE of infection in the etiology of atherosclerosis and the development of cardiovascular disease has recently received considerable attention.1 Periodontal disease, one of the most common human infections, has been found to be a risk factor for coronary heart disease in a number of studies.2-9 However, the association between periodontal disease and the risk for cerebrovascular accident (CVA) is much less studied. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between baseline periodontal status and subsequent incidence and mortality of CVA in a representative sample of US adults.
