Abstract
A general thermodynamic theory of dispersion phenomena is discussed It is assumed that the behaviour of the material is fully determined by external and internal variables of state From expansions of the thermodynamic potentials in the appropriate thermodynamic variables relations for the dynamical behaviour and for the fluctuations of the thermodynamic variables are derived In order to describe phase transitions a rather reasonable assumption is introduced which concernes the behaviour of the internal energy near the phase transition In particular the results demonstrate the influence of the external boundary conditions on the critical behaviour of the system Finally special cases are considered which illustrate the relation between the thermodynamic theory and well known theories of ferroelectricity. Keywords
