Oxygen isotope effect inYBa2Cu3O7prepared by burningYBa2Cu3inO16andO18

Abstract
We prepared YBa2 Cu3 powder by ball milling a 2:1 molar mixture of the intermetallics BaCu and CuY. We synthesized YBa2 Cu3 (16O)7x and YBa2 Cu3 (18O)7x by oxidizing the YBa2 Cu3 powder in O16 and O18. The O16 /18O ratios were determined by laser-ionization and sputtering-ionization mass spectroscopy. The YBa2 Cu3 (160)7x sample had 99.8 at. %16O, and the YBa2 Cu3 (18O)7x sample had 96.5 at. %18O. Susceptibility measurements of the superconducting transition temperature (Tc=91.7 K for O16; half-point transition at 84 K show an isotope effect of 0.4±0.1 K.
