Abstract
Observations were made in Northeast Mato Grosso on thirty species of Xyleborini (Scolytidae) in the genera Dryocoetoides, Premnobius, Sampsonius, Xyleborinus and Xyleborus. The biology of the species is discussed with special reference to their distribution, host plants, gallery systems and actual or potential economic importance. Seven species are recorded from Brazil for the first time. Two of the species, Xyleborus affinis and X. ferrugineus, are of known economic importance as vectors of pathogenic fungi of mango and cacao respectively. X. nr. solitariceps sp. A was found attacking healthy trees (Protium spp.). The attacks of most species are secondary, but their galleries can damage felled logs and unseasoned timber. Keywords
