Abstract
The species occurrence among a few primate species including man of some metabolic reactions of importance in drug metabolism is surveyed. Many metabolic pathways are widespread in their species occurrence, and occur in man and other primate and nonprimate species. Some metabolic pathways, however, are more highly developed in primates or are in some cases restricted to primates or certain groups among them. Thus, the formation of the V-glucuronide of sulphadimethoxine and the O-methylation of 3,5-diiodo-4-hydroxybenzoic acid appear to be metabolic reactions largely restricted in their occurrence to man and other primates. The glutamine conjugation of phenylacetic and indoleacetic acids shows a remarkable correlation with evolutionary status since it appears to occur only in man, apes, New and Old World monkey species but not in prosimians and nonprimate species. Keywords
