Abstract
Suicidal ideation (SI) and suicide attempts (SAs) are highly prevalent in the community (11%-14% and 2.8%-4.6%, respectively)1,2 and are strong risk factors for completed suicide.3 Psychological autopsy studies have demonstrated that the majority of suicides occur on the individual’s first SA.3,4 Thus, it is highly important to understand risk factors for suicidal behavior and intervene prior to the individual making the first SA. A well-established risk factor for suicidal behavior is the presence of mental disorders, especially mood disorders,1,5,6 substance use disorders,7 and schizophrenia.8,9
