Sex and Vigor in Populus

Abstract
A point of interest is suggested by data on the sex of a number of poplar clones. Of 76 clones bearing flower buds, only 18 were females. The most important factor that would destroy the true randomness of the sample was that individual trees were selected for their apparent vigor, health, and good stem form. This suggests that a positive correlation exists in this genus between maleness and desirable characters such as vigor and form.
